Birthdays 2020 / COVID-style

Hi there! Welcome back! This is Kim taking over the blog this week.

Alicia is enjoying a well-deserved vacay in Turks and Caicos. I can’t wait to see and read about all the pretty things that she stumbles upon as she basks in the Caribbean sun.

Onto All The Pretty Things for this week:

Okay, here’s some real talk: I love to celebrate birthdays. Not just mine, everyone’s. It’s the ONE day that’s all yours. Your “yes” day. Yes to sweets. Yes to presents. Yes to anything you want. Why? BECAUSE IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY.

Also, for me, once it’s over, it’s over. See you next year. I don’t do “birthday week” or “birthday month". The build-up to it is fine, but if it’s a few days after, I’m over it. And honestly, I think I feel this way because my Dad’s birthday is 3 days after mine, my stepmom’s birthday is 3 days after his, my cousin’s birthday is the day after that… see where I’m going here, we just keep moving down the line. It’s like birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese. Once your hour is up, move along, kid, it’s someone else’s special day.

On my actual birthday this year, my husband had COVID (nothing needing hospitalization.) So we were good and quarantined. Any other time, I would’ve jumped for joy over a strict stay-at-home policy. But… we had just started allllll the planning for the blog. Cakes and balloons were ordered. Outfits picked out. Photographers scheduled. Friends invited. All party-planned for social distancing, of course, but fun plans nonetheless. So Covid called for cancellations. Well, rescheduling.

Our birthdays are almost a month apart, so we decided to throw something together somewhere in the middle. More than anything, because we had a prepaid cake and balloons from my cancelled birthday (and if you have an idea how pricey those two items can be, you make it happen.)

Alicia’s new Hillcrest house was the backdrop for our party (more on Lisha’s Dainty Dwelling later!)

End of summer called for a sweet goodbye to our favorite summer colors: peach, pink, cream, and gold. (Balloon arch: Just Peachy)

Party drink: Aperol Spritz with a cotton candy topper. This is Alicia’s go-to summer drink and she is an expert mixologist for the prime Italian spirit - the cotton candy just adds to the prettiness. (Wine glasses from West Elm.)

Kim’s Birthday Cake: A Peach + Gold Ombre Neapolitan with Buttercream (Sweets By Logan)

Alicia’s Outfit: Madewell Jumper and Kaanas Booties from one of our FAVE local stores: Box Turtle

Kim’s Outfit: O’Neill Jumper

Insulated color-themed party tumblers for the guests were an added color bonus and a huge hit.

Party eats: almost every type of cheese you can dream of mixed with yummy cured meats, berries, grapes, and a wide array of jams and crackers…A charcuterie lovers’ paradise.

Alicia’s Sweet Treat: A Key Lie Pie from Community Bakery

Flowers: Carl Carter

A big thank you to our friends who tossed aside plans to drop-in for our little shindig!

COVID-times are definitely unprecedented times. I’m sure we can all agree that “precedented times” are missed and we promise not to take them for granted ever again.

If you’ve had a birthday so far this year, I hope you had a cheerful celebration, even if it was in comfy clothes on your couch. If your birthday is yet to come; CHEERS. This will definitely be the year to remember for all of us.

I love candid photos!

Sending well-wishes and safe-keeping to you, friends.

XO, Kim (and Alicia!)
